Chapter Nine

Luke sat in the kitchen and couldn’t muster any guilt or remorse for having the best sex of his life. Yeah, he should’ve fought against the hard crush of desire consuming him every time he looked at seductive Ania, but he was glad he hadn't. It had been great. Both times. It would be great a third and fourth time too. Even now, his arms burned to wrap around her narrow waist, pull her yielding body against his chest and...Whoa! Time to put on the brakes. He had work to do. Ania had proved to be the distraction he feared but hadn’t anticipated. Damn, but she was a satisfying distraction.

“Smells good,” he said, inhaling deeply, rubbing his hand across the front of the faded blue t-shirt that he wore over his old navy athletic shorts. His stomach growled reminding him he hadn’t eaten since lunch, as he took in the powerful scents of garlic, onion, vinegar and who the hell knew what else Ania was using to cook. He turned on his laptop that he’d set up on the cream colored granite bar and settled on the cushioned counter height stool.

Emails. He had to answer his emails.

But, his eyes settled on Ania chopping bright purple cabbage at the kitchen island instead. It reminded him of how she looked on the swing in the botanical gardens. A living sculpture.

She was beautiful in her rumpled white dress with the tan dishtowel tossed over her shoulder and her long, dark wavy hair haphazardly gathered on top of her head. Just as she’d been when she was surrounded by the rich colors of the blooming flowers on that swing, here she was cast against the intense purple of the cabbage, vibrant orange of the mandarins and deep green of the parsley spread out on the counter like paint on an artist’s palette. It was eye-sex for the senses. And what made it all that much more special for him was that it was in his space, the one he’d built with his own hands.

When he used a hammer, nail, grout and sweat to create this kitchen, he thought of the sugar sand beach for the color of his white shaker cabinets; the glimmering, turquoise gulf for his glass tile backsplash; and the weathered boardwalks over the sand dunes for his wood floors.

What he never considered was how a determined woman would blend into that space too.

Coming here with her was a big friggin’ mistake.

Now, every time he came to his retreat on the beach, he’d think of Ania in the kitchen cooking dinner for them...and of her in his bed. Would the memory be good or bad? Something to enjoy or long for because it could never happen again?

Luke looked down pretending to read his emails, but his eyes kept returning to Ania. It surprised him how easily and happily she moved in the kitchen. The way she held the nine-inch knife while chopping the cabbage with one hand as she gently gripped
